Every morning, Pip carried messages around Rookspire Tower and set himself one tiny challenge: seven smooth circles without making a single squawk. His rider, Jessa, counted under her visor while the wind smelled of cold stone and pigeon feathers. “One,” she whispered. Pip tucked his claws, looking very noble for a creature who had once dropped a turnip into the captain’s helmet.
Until one day, a new little flag snapped from the tower, painted with a wobbly mouse wearing a crown. Pip’s beak clicked. Because of that, he hiccupped a laugh on circle three, and because of THAT, Jessa’s message ribbon fluttered loose and tied itself around the flagpole. The tower guards below cheered as if this were an official drill. Pip wanted to shriek, swoop, and blame the mouse.
Instead, he beat his wings slowly—whuff, whuff—around the tower again and again. On the seventh circle, the ribbon slid free and landed neatly in Jessa’s hand. She patted his neck. “No squawk.” Pip only winked at the crowned mouse flag, and if you check the tower top, you may catch him beginning seven smooth circles all over again.
