🎨 How to color it

Color the puffin with a black back, white belly, orange beak, and red-orange feet, then give the lava bright scarlet, the river icy blue, and the Iceland-shaped island mossy green. Use sharp colored pencils for the thin lava streams and cliff cracks, following each wavy line from the volcano’s rim downward. Try a smoky gray-to-lavender plume above the crater so the orange lava looks even hotter against the cool northern landscape.

The story behind this coloring page

Finnur’s Lava-River Riddle — Every day before the tide slapped the black rocks, Finnur the puffin played his new game: Lava-River Riddle. Read the full story →

Every day before the tide slapped the black rocks, Finnur the puffin played his new game: Lava-River Riddle. He dropped shiny pebbles beside river bends and dared himself to guess which twist pointed toward home. The cold air tasted salty, and the grass tickled his orange feet.

Until one day, the mountain coughed—whump!—and a smoky tower climbed the sky. Because of that, ash covered Finnur’s pebble clues. Because of that, the river began shining in strange red flashes, and his game turned into a chase. “New rule!” he cried. “Follow what glows!” He hopped over cracks, zipped past cliffs, and spotted a hot ribbon of lava sliding toward the water.

Finally, Finnur piled his hidden pebbles into one bright arrow on the safe ridge, showing the other puffins where to land before the steam hissed up. His riddle had run away with him—and brought everyone home. Can you find the river bend where his first clue might have tickled his orange feet?
