Every day, Mira dared herself to solve one mystery before the fence shadows touched the stone path. She had cracked the beetle clicks, the fern rustles, and even the squeaky gate’s rusty song. Then one day, from near the flowerpot, came a sound she did not know: plink…plink-plink…pliiiiink. It smelled of wet metal and warm dirt.
Because of that, Mira chased the drips past zinnias, daisies, and leaves as sharp as little green arrows. Because of that, she found the watering can tipped just enough to leak a secret trail toward the thirstiest roots. “Not random,” Mira whispered. She bumped the handle once, twice, three times, until water rushed with a bright glug-glug and soaked the pot.
At last, the tallest bloom lifted its head, and a hidden ladybug band scrambled out from under a damp leaf, tapping thanks on a petal. Look beside the flowerpot again—you can almost hear Mira’s plink-plink mystery before the fence shadows touch the stone path.
