Every morning, before the sun warmed the zinnias, Pippa tapped her wings in order: stripe, dot, daisy, curl. Tap-tap, swish. It kept her from getting bored while the dew dried on her feet. Then one day she invented Pattern-Pop, a game with one rule: whatever her wing showed, she had to find it in the garden and shout, “Pop!”
Because of that, she spotted a checkerboard beetle asleep on a picnic napkin and popped so loudly he rolled into a thimble. Because of THAT, the thimble clanged against a watering can, waking four grumpy snails, two ants, and a ladybug wearing pollen like a mustache. They all demanded a turn.
Soon the garden rang with “heart-pop!” “star-pop!” “plaid-pop!” Pippa laughed until her antennae curled tighter than fiddleheads. Finally, she changed the rule: everyone had to share their best find. Look back at her wings and see how many pops you can spot before the dew dries with one last tap-tap, swish.
