Beneath the old iris arch, Orin kept one wing-line unfinished, a pale gap among the teal and copper curves. He wanted a last drop of dark flower-ink before moonrise, so he left the warm scent of pollen and followed a vine that ticked softly against the stones. Each spiral led farther from his sheltered perch. A thorn caught the edge of his wing and stole a shining scale, but Orin kept on until the vine ended at a dry bud nobody had opened.
Inside the bud was not ink. It held a single black seed, smooth as a raindrop and cold from hiding. From below came the rasp of a night beetle dragging an empty husk for winter shelter. Orin pressed his unfinished wing against the bud, shook loose the seed, and let it fall where the beetle would pass. No one saw the gift land. By dawn, the missing scale glowed beside Orin’s pale gap like a small lantern, and the old iris arch smelled again of pollen.
