🎨 How to color it

Layer sandstone golds and warm grays on Angkor Wat, jade and rose on the lotus pond, and deep teal on the ornate corner patterns. Use sharp pencils for the temple’s stacked towers and border curls, then switch to light, horizontal strokes for the pond water around the lily pads. Try leaving the Cambodia map mostly ivory with a thin saffron glow along its edge, so it feels like a quiet emblem in the water.

At the western pond, Vireak pressed a reed stylus into damp clay, trying to make a border fine enough for the towers’ morning shadow; the clay smelled of rain and lotus root. A ripple spoke from under a lily pad: “Not the edge—make the middle.” So, friend, he did the strangest thing: with wet thumbs, chipped shell, and patient scratches, he shaped the country’s crooked bays and shoulders where the reflection trembled. When sunrise struck it, every lotus shadow kept that handmade outline. Ever since, Cambodia rests in the water whenever Angkor wakes.
