By the glass courtyard, Osric warmed his palms around a lumpy wooden spoon he had carved from fallen pearwood, its bowl sanded smooth as a river stone and its handle curling like a question mark. He had meant it for measuring star-sugar, but he kept lifting it toward the morning panes, proud of every nick his knife had left. The bricks smelled damp; the potted sage gave off a peppery hush. “Observe,” he told no one, which made it sound official.
Sunlight slid through gold, violet, and blue glass, pooling in the spoon’s bowl. Osric tilted it, expecting a sparkle. Instead, the spoon gave a tiny wooden belch and stamped a perfect circle of honey light onto his sleeve. Then another. Then a third, each one brighter, as if the spoon had been sampling the dawn and marking its favorites.
Only then did Osric understand: he had not made a measuring spoon at all, but a sunrise judge.
