🎨 How to color it

Color the number 2 in sapphire blue, make the three stars golden yellow, add ruby red to the curved bands, and fill the leaf-shaped pieces with emerald green. Use sharp colored pencils for the small stained-glass sections, coloring one outlined pane at a time so the black borders stay crisp. Try making the two large stars slightly different—one sunny gold and one pale lemon—so they feel like secret lights inside the number.

Behind the ticket booth at the glass arcade, Della kept one blue chip on her shelf and tapped the empty spot beside it. Tink, tink. She wanted a second chip before the evening lamps woke, so she slipped out past the warm smell of oil wicks and into the hush of colored windows.

The arcade floor glittered in pieces: red arcs, green slivers, yellow points. Della traded her silver button for a blue chip at the mender’s cart, then heard a tiny cough from a crack in the wall. “Psst. Too bright in here?” whispered a star-shaped glimmer, stuck between two panes. Della could keep her chip, or spend it as a wedge. She pressed the blue glass into the crack. Pop! The glimmer sprang free, scattering gold sparks over her sleeves.

When Della returned, her shelf still had only one chip—but the freed glimmer followed, bobbing like a secret it could not hold. Soon every quiet corner flashed blue and gold, and children came running to share the shine. If you count the stars tucked inside the big number, you may find where Della’s second secret landed: tink, tink.
