Every evening, Fenn raced the Numberworks concourse before the lamps clicked on, daring himself to spot five new door-signs before the brass clock gave its fifth clack. He knew the smells of inked stone, hot wax, and dust shaken loose by hurried feet. Then one evening, the first four signs answered back with tiny clicks of their own, and the fifth mark rolled away like a coin down a corridor no map admitted.
Because of that, Fenn chased it past walls of leaves that rustled without wind. Because of that, the floor broke into black-and-white squares that snapped beneath him like flags in a storm. At the last clack, he pressed his palm to a blank round door, and every pattern he had counted spun into one bright lock. “Open, then,” he whispered. The door flew inward, carrying the scent of rain and new ink, and Fenn laughed into the dark, already searching for five new door-signs before the lamps clicked on.
