Every night, Rook raced through the Sky Archive, stamping moon-routes onto vellum so the bat pilots could zip between stars before dawn. The air smelled of cold ink and rain, and his tail streamed behind him like a banner. Then one night, the northern route vanished from every chart at once, leaving the bats circling, clicking, and bumping wings in the silver dark.
Because of that, Rook chased the wrong wind through spiral after spiral until his stamps rattled loose. Because of that, the whole rookery followed him into an unmarked pocket of sky where the crescent moons hung close enough to hum. “Not lost,” Rook shouted, laughing as the sound rang through him. “Hidden!”
At the smallest curl of the thinnest moon, he found a folded sky door no mapmaker had ever checked. Behind it waited the missing route, bright and furious, lined with stars that matched the patterns on every bat’s wings. Rook stamped the new path across the dark, and the pilots swept around him like he had always been their compass, exactly where he belonged in the cold ink and rain.
