🎨 How to color it

Color the number 6 a cozy pumpkin orange, the six leaves in golden yellow, moss green, and russet red, and the inner loop a pale peach. Use chunky crayons or broad markers for the wide number and leaf sections, letting little hands color right over the bold black lines if they want. Try making each leaf a different fall color so children can count all six as they finish.

Under the hedge, Nola patted her nest: one, two, three, four, five soft leaves. The wind went hush-hush through the grass. She wanted one more for the chilly night, so she stepped out of her cozy hole and followed a trail that curled like a big 6.

A prickly burr stuck to her paw. “Ouch, but onward,” she whispered. At the bend, Nola peeked into the round hollow and found not a leaf, but a tiny feather, warm and downy, hidden where no beetle had looked.

She carried it home, lighter than a sigh. Tucked among the five leaves, it made the nest feel just right. Next time you see the big 6 and its leaves, can you guess where Nola found her hush-hush surprise?
