Every evening at the city planetarium, Liora lined up paper hearts on the carpet while the star machine hummed like a sleepy bee. She had just invented a game called Nine Lights: touch eight hearts softly, save the ninth for a brave wish. She always whispered the first eight. The ninth stayed quiet in her pocket, warm and crinkly.
Until one evening, the star machine clicked off, and the round room went blue-black. Because of that, the other children stopped rustling their jackets. Because of THAT, Liora heard her own tiny breath and the far-off rain tapping the roof. She placed her ninth heart on the floor and said, “Nine.” The ceiling bloomed with stars, one by one, bright as sugar. When you count the hearts around the big 9, can you find the one that might have heard Liora’s brave wish?
