🎨 How to color it

Color the mushroom cap cherry red, its round spots cream, the gills pale peach, and the soil a rich cocoa brown. Use chunky crayons or markers for the big cap and stem, then try a sharp pencil for the thin root lines under the ground. For a secret surprise, make the roots fade from tan near the stem to golden yellow at the tips.

Under the soft dirt roof, Bram tapped one root, then another. Tap-tap, shiver-shiver! He had just invented Down-Below Dare: follow the tickliest root until it tells a secret. The longest root wriggled past pebble caves and crumbly black soil, so Bram slid after it, leaving his cozy ring of leaf bits behind.

The root trail scratched his cap and stole one round white spot—plip!—but Bram kept going. A tiny beetle whispered, “Don’t wake the old stone.” Too late. The stone hummed, and all the roots buzzed like sleepy bees. Bram raced back with a better prize than a secret: he knew which root sang, which root curled, and which root led home. Next time you peek under his cap, can you guess where the tickliest root begins?
