🎨 How to color it

Color the morel cap in warm sienna and ocher, the tall stem in creamy ivory with pale gray grooves, and the fern frond in deep woodland green. Use sharp colored pencils for the many cap pockets and fern leaflets, filling each small shape from its edge toward the center. Try making the cap darker near the lower rim and lighter at the rounded top, as if forest light is sliding over it.

Under the old log, where the air smelled of wet bark and cold mint, Quill polished a tiny brass thimble with a strip of moss. He wanted one drop of sunrise for his sister’s dark nursery shelf, where her new books always looked gray. The thimble had belonged to their mother, and when Quill held it to his ear, it gave a soft ting, like a faraway spoon on glass.

He stepped beyond the safe root arch into Fern Ravine. Mist beaded on his cap; gritty sand scratched his stem. A beetle ferryman wanted payment to cross the trickle, so Quill gave up the red thread tied around the thimble. Past the water, a tall fern bent low and whispered, “Sun does not like to be caught.” Still, Quill climbed the pebbly bank and held the thimble high. Gold poured in—then spilled through a pinprick he had never noticed.

The drop ran down the fern’s ribs, into every leaflet, and the whole ravine flashed green. From under stones, caps and beetles and sleepy pill bugs came out to stare. Quill laughed so hard the thimble rang by itself. He brought home no sun-drop, only the bright secret: joy grows larger when it leaks. Next time you see the honeycombed cap beside the fern, can you find where the little thimble’s sun went?
