🎨 How to color it

Color the mushroom cap cherry red, its star and circle spots golden yellow and pale pink, the acorns warm brown, and the swirling oak leaves burnt orange. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny cap patterns and acorn crosshatching, then switch to broader strokes on the big mushroom stem and open leaf shapes. Try a playful autumn gust by shading the motion lines with light sky blue and making the raised sneaker a surprising teal.

Every day, Saffron practiced tap-tap-tapping in the autumn grass, trying to make her sneakers sound louder than the beetles’ clicky knees. Dry leaves scratched past her ankles, acorns thumped down like tiny drums, and still her right shoe only went pff.

Until one day, during a high kick, the pff answered, “Peep!” Saffron froze so fast a ladybug bumped into her stem. Because of that, she shook the sneaker, and out rolled half an acorn with a curled little whistle tucked inside, smelling nutty and damp. Because of THAT, every curious peep called the wind closer—whoosh!—spinning leaves, acorns, and Saffron into a ridiculous one-foot dance.

“Stop helping!” she giggled at the wind. Finally, Saffron tucked the whistle under her cap and tapped softly: tap, tap, peep. The gust settled into a circle, just loud enough for beetles to keep time. Next time acorns thump in the grass, check Saffron’s raised sneaker—you might hear the pff answer back.
