Every morning, before the milkweed pods rattled in the cold, Ziggy tied on the striped scarf he had sewn with crooked stitches and one shiny blue button. He called the button his Slide Starter, because he had carved a tiny wooden sled for it and clipped it to the scarf fringe. Zip! He sent it down the yarn track, then trotted across the frozen meadow to show the snow hares his invention.
Until one day, Pipkin Hare swapped the sled’s pebble weight for a jingle bell. Because of that, Ziggy’s button-sled rang “ding-a-ling!” and shot across the ice. Because of THAT, Ziggy chased it, skidded onto the smallest pond, and heard krik-krak under one hoof. “Nobody breathe!” he squeaked. At last, he flicked the scarf fringe like a fishing line, hooked his runaway button, and tiptoed back proud as a parade. If you spot the cracks under Ziggy’s hooves, listen for that tiny ding-a-ling.
