🎨 How to color it

Color the haunted house in smoky purples and slate grays, the smiling ghosts pale mint, the crooked gravestones cool gray, and the bats deep indigo. Use sharp colored pencils for the roof shingles, window boards, fence posts, and tiny star points so the many little shapes stay clear. Try a soft midnight-blue glow around the crescent moon, then add a few warm yellow windows to make the house feel mysteriously awake.

The story behind this coloring page

The Moonstep Game — Under a fingernail moon, Tavia drew a path in the dust with her shoe: one step for every star, two for every bat, and a whisper for every window. Read the full story →

Under a fingernail moon, Tavia drew a path in the dust with her shoe: one step for every star, two for every bat, and a whisper for every window. The hill smelled like dry grass and old rain, and the crooked house waited with its porch light dark. She had never gone past the first gravestone before. “Moonstep,” she said, very softly, and placed her foot on the first pale pebble.

The game grew as she climbed. A boarded window counted as a pause. A chimney puff meant three quiet breaths. When a ghost bobbed near the tower, Tavia nearly stopped, but its round mouth made an O, as if it were counting too. Her knees felt fizzy, not like fear exactly, more like opening a door she had only knocked on.

Then the bats changed everything. They weren’t swooping at all; they were drawing arrows in the air, showing the next safe step. The ghosts floated beside the roof, keeping score with happy little “boo”s that sounded like bubbles in a bottle.

By the porch, Tavia added one last rule: everyone got to begin again whenever the moon reappeared from a cloud. If you trace the winding path with your eyes, can you find the first pale pebble under the fingernail moon?
