🎨 How to color it

Color the bonsai leaves in deep jade and fresh spring green, the twisting trunk in warm umber, the round pot in pale stone gray, and the lantern in soft sandstone. Use sharp colored pencils for the many small leaves and pebbles, then blend the long trunk curves with gentle strokes that follow the bark lines. Try a quiet sunrise gradient behind the upper branches so the bonsai feels warm against the cool raked sand.

Beside the sand garden, Rue pressed a willow twig into the smooth dust and made her first ring around the bonsai pot. The sand hissed softly under her hand. She had just invented Shadow-Ring: every circle had to follow something real—the pot’s rim, a pebble’s belly, the bend of a root—without breaking. When she finished one clean loop, she sat back with gritty fingers and felt taller than the little lantern.

The afternoon light slid lower. Rue added rings around stones, around the rake lines, around the empty spaces where leaves made lace-shaped shade. Each mark looked simple until her wrist found the right curve. “I made that one,” she whispered, and the words felt round in her mouth.

Then the lantern’s square window flashed gold. Not fire—sun. Its shadow fell across the sand in a neat black frame, drawing a ring Rue had not touched. She laughed so quietly the leaves barely stirred, and made one last circle to meet it. Next time you notice the pebbles by the pot, see if you can find the game still going, ring by ring around the bonsai pot.
