Behind the tack shed, where the leather smelled warm and dusty, Bren stretched his neck toward the fence-line mint. He had never stepped past the last rail without a rider, not even for one green bite. The wind slid through sagebrush with a dry shhh, as if it knew a secret.
Bren lifted one hoof over the sandy gap. Prickles scratched his fetlock, and a burr grabbed his tail. That was the price: one tug, one sting, one little gulp of courage. Then something rustled under the rabbitbrush. A kit fox, no bigger than a saddlebag, blinked up at him with moon-pale eyes. “Don’t tell,” she whispered. “The mint hides the water smell.”
Bren bent lower. Beneath the mint was damp earth, cool as a cellar stone. He nudged the leaves aside until a tiny seep glittered. The fox drank first; Bren took only a mouthful, sweeter than he had imagined. Then he stepped back through the gap, tail burr and all, carrying the secret in his steady walk. If you study the fence and shrubs, can you guess where the water smell is hiding behind that dry shhh?
