By the pumpkin patch fence, Bixby tapped one claw, then two, then three on the biggest jack-o’-lantern stem. He had set himself a splendidly silly challenge: say “Happy Halloween” without squawking once. The pumpkin smelled like wet earth and cinnamon candy, and its carved grin made every tap sound hollow and important. “No beak-noise,” Bixby whispered, which was already cheating a little.
He tried wing flicks for H, tail swishes for A, and a dramatic eyebrow wiggle for the double P. A round bat named Niblet copied him upside down and got so dizzy he hiccuped. Leaves skittered over the dirt like tiny paper boats. Above them, the moon wore a sleepy smile while small clouds drifted past, puff… puff… puff.
Then Bixby noticed the puffs were not random. One cloud for H, two stars for A, three dots for P: the sky had been spelling back. Niblet squeaked, “The moon knows your code!” Bixby puffed his chest, tapped the stem again, and settled right where he belonged, between pumpkin grin and moon grin. Next time you spot those stars, see if they’re still answering his one-claw, two-claw, three-claw tap.
