🎨 How to color it

Color the cracked seeds chestnut brown, the sprout and young tree leaves bright spring green, the mature tree canopy deep leafy green, and the little flowers sunny yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the many leaf veins and thin roots, then switch to broader strokes for the round cloud and large tree crown. Try making each growth stage a little darker than the one before it, as if the tree is collecting years in its leaves.

Every morning at the root nursery, Gus counted the rows in a brave, tiny voice: seed, sprout, sapling, tree. The big roots hummed under the soil, the fern fronds tickled his bark, and the daisies nodded as if they were very important judges. Gus wanted to call the roll loud enough for Old Canopy to hear, but his words always came out like a mouse wearing slippers.

Until one day, the first seed in line went “Pffft!” and wobbled sideways. Because of that, Gus skipped the sprout and counted a pebble. Because of THAT, the pebble took a bow, the daisies gasped, and Old Canopy’s leaves shook with the quietest laugh in the nursery. Gus felt his roots prickle. He bent close to the cracked seed, where nobody ever looked except beetles.

Inside sat a speckled cricket with a leaf whistle and a face full of mischief. “Roll call needed music,” it chirped. Gus swallowed one small gulp of courage and called, “Seed—with cricket! Sprout! Sapling! Tree!” His voice rang past the flowers and up into the branches. Next time you see the open seed, check whether that snicker is still hiding where the morning began: seed, sprout, sapling, tree.
