Along Pine Ridge, Juniper nosed a fallen spruce twig until its cone tickled his whiskers. Then he invented Echo Dash: tap the cone, bark once, race three trees ahead, and listen for the mountain to bark back. His paws drummed thup-thup-thup over packed snow, and his silver fur flashed between green branches. “Your turn!” called Leena, sliding after him with the other trail kids, breath puffing like little clouds.
The game grew wilder. Tap, bark, dash. Tap, bark, dash. Every echo came back bigger, bouncing from rock to rock until laughter filled the cold air. Juniper lifted his ears so high they almost seemed to catch the sound before it landed.
Then a black raven on a pine limb tapped the cone with its beak—tok!—and gave a perfect husky yip. The ridge answered with a whole chorus, as if the mountain had joined the game too. Juniper stood still, eyes shining, joy too large for one tail to wag. Next time you spot the pine cone by his muzzle, can you hear the first tok that started Echo Dash?
