One stormy afternoon, sirens skidded in, soaked families crowded the forecourt, and the power snapped out with a pop and a smell of hot dust. Because the main cabinet jammed, Ellis ran to the forgotten side alcove; because the red key turned there, boxes of blankets, inhalers, and juice appeared.
