Every evening, Odette carried a cloudy glass heart to the current arch and held it between two streams that never touched. It looked like a trinket, but it had been pressed into her curl by a silent traveler whose cloak smelled of rain beyond the sea. She waited while ribbons of water combed her fins and bubbles clicked like beads against stone.
Until one evening, the arch went still. Because the current stopped, the heart sank from her curl; because it sank, a patient ray of moonlight passed through it for the first time. Inside, not words but a path appeared, bending in rose and pearl toward the deep nursery where sleeping eggs needed warmer water.
Odette did not hurry. She turned the glass heart once, twice, until the path brightened. Then the two streams leaned together, and all the long waiting opened like a door beneath the current arch.
