🎨 How to color it

Try deep plum for the witch’s gown, antique gold for the moon arch, jade green for the leafy staff, and coral, cream, and burgundy across the lilies, roses, and poppies. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny bodice patterns, hat flowers, star clusters, and vine curls, then blend larger cloak ribbons with slow strokes following each sweeping curve. For a mischievous finish, make the blank full moon look like pearly paper with the faintest lavender shadow, as if it has just been cut and pasted into the sky.

Every evening, Ottilie trimmed silver scraps in the warm glasshouse, making moons no bigger than saucers while the orchids dripped and the ferns tickled her sleeves. The plain bone folder in her pocket looked like a dull little stick, but it had belonged to her first handmade spellbook; she trusted its edge more than any wand. She wanted one moon large enough for the conservatory arcade.

Until one evening, the paste sneezed. Because of that, her enormous paper moon leapt from the worktable and stuck itself high above the flower arches. Because of that, every rose, lily, and poppy bowed toward it as if Ottilie had stolen the sky and framed it in leaves. “Stay there, you beautiful nuisance,” she whispered, laughing as paste freckled her hat.

At last she used the bone folder to smooth one stubborn wrinkle from the air itself. The moon held. Visitors later praised her rare lunar summoning, but Ottilie only patted her sticky fingers and admired the proud, crisp circle she had cut by hand in the warm glasshouse.
