🎨 How to color it

Color the chrysanthemums in burnt orange, golden yellow, and deep burgundy, with olive-green maple leaves, cranberry-red berries, and a satin plum bow. Use sharp colored pencils for the many narrow petals and curl tips, shading from each petal’s base outward to keep the flower heads crisp. For a playful Art Nouveau finish, let the background vines fade from pale sage to smoky teal while the bouquet stays warm and autumnal.

Every evening, Valen locked the glasshouse salon after counting the chrysanthemums without touching a single petal; his private challenge was to make the old bouquet sneeze by midnight using only patience, pepper dust, and a perfectly innocent face. The flowers never sneezed. They only rustled, smelling of damp leaves and cold bronze, while the maple fronds around them curled like amused eyebrows.

Until one night, the ribbon at the stems untied itself with a soft satin hiss. Because of that, Valen had to hold the whole towering bunch upright with both elbows while the berries rolled across the tiled floor like tiny marbles. Because of that, the chrysanthemums leaned close and whispered the punch line first: “Too soon.”

At last he stopped sprinkling pepper and waited. One minute. Twelve. Forty. The bow, offended by his stillness, tied itself into an enormous flourish and dusted him with one golden sneeze of pollen. Valen laughed so hard the vines trembled, and the old bouquet finally sneezed by midnight.
