🎨 How to color it

Layer the corn kernels in golden yellow and amber, color the tall husks sage and olive green, and give the pumpkins burnt orange with chestnut stems. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny checkerboards, paisleys, spirals, and leaf veins, filling the smallest kernel patterns before shading the larger husk panels. Try a cool lavender-gray background behind the spiral sun and floating acorns so the warm corn and pumpkins glow forward.

Under the low amber sun, Iris packed her little press with flat leaves, dry grass, and one empty slot saved for a perfect strand of corn silk. The field had gone quiet after harvest, all papery rubs and pumpkin-vine curls, but the last standing stalk kept its husks folded tight as hands. Iris left her warm blanket by the stone marker and stepped through burrs that clicked against her socks. A thorn snagged her cuff; she gave up the blue thread to get free.

At the stalk, she eased back one husk and heard a soft skritch, not wind. Inside, beneath the silk, lay a curled scrap no bigger than an acorn cap, covered in tiny ink spirals that matched the paths moths made at dusk. “Who wrote in here?” Iris whispered. The scrap smelled of dust, sap, and sun-warmed paper. She carried it back instead of the silk and pressed it between two oak leaves, curious enough to leave the last slot open.
