🎨 How to color it

Color the beetle’s wing covers chestnut brown, its fan-shaped antennae golden tan, the clover blossoms pale pink, and the layered leaves in olive and fresh green. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny dots, leg joints, and leaf veins, then fill the larger wing covers with smooth, even strokes. Try a soft amber highlight down the beetle’s back so it looks as if sun is slipping through the grass.

The story behind this coloring page

Taro’s Brass Listening Comb — Under a folded dock leaf, Taro polished his tiny brass comb until it smelled like rain on pennies. Read the full story →

Under a folded dock leaf, Taro polished his tiny brass comb until it smelled like rain on pennies. He wanted to hear the ticking his aunt had promised was hidden somewhere beyond the clover bank, because the comb was the last thing she had left him. When the sound came—tik, tik, tik—thin as a seed tapping glass, he tucked the comb beneath his wing case and stepped out into the cool, hairy grass.

The world was larger than his leaf. A burr snagged one foot, and he had to leave behind a shiny boot-cap to wriggle free. Wind pushed the sorrel leaves together with a papery hush. “Wait for me,” Taro whispered to the ticking. At last he raised the brass comb between his feathery antennae, and the sound trembled through it: not a clock, but clover roots sipping water underground.

He carried the comb home scratched, one foot bare, and full of secret music. From then on, he did not keep it only for missing someone; he used it to listen for small wonders. Next time you see the beetle among the clover and broad leaves, can you guess which tiny tickle he is hearing?
