Each morning, Reeve snapped through the current-cut reef before the sand bells chimed, daring himself to pass seven cold ribbons without touching coral. One day the sixth ribbon vanished, leaving only a warm hush and the peppery smell of stirred sponge. Because of that, he circled instead of striking forward; because of that, he heard the reef plates grind open beneath the branching fans. At last, the seventh ribbon rose from below, bright and narrow, and Reeve slid through with his teeth shut, patience flashing sharper than speed.
