🎨 How to color it

Layer emerald and deep teal around the cat’s iris, warm amber on the almond-shaped eye band, and olive, sage, and plum through the curling leaves and vines. Use sharp colored pencils and work from the heaviest black outlines inward, so the tiny spirals, dotted arcs, and leaf veins stay crisp. Try making the pupil’s white highlight glow by shading the iris darkest right beside it, then letting the colors fade outward.

Before the conservatory opened, Liora pressed one paw to the cool tile and dared herself to bring back a color no visitor had ever named. Her velvet basket waited under the heater, but she slipped beyond it into the fern aisle, where the air smelled of wet stone and peppery leaves. Every vine curled like a question. To pass the locked orchid arch, she paid with one silver whisker, tucked into a crack that hummed when she touched it.

Past the arch, a black lily opened without a sound. In its center was not pollen, but a tiny sunrise folded tight as a secret. Liora blinked, and the color rose into her eye: green edged with gold, gold edged with rose, joy bright enough to ache. She could have carried it back unseen. Instead, she leapt to the highest ledge and widened her gaze until the whole glasshouse blushed awake.

By opening time, no one found the whisker, and no one knew why every leaf seemed to be smiling. Liora returned to her warm basket with nothing in her paws, changed by a color no visitor had ever named.
