Under the warm stripe of afternoon sun, Tansy tapped her round collar tag on the rug: ting, ting, pause. She had invented a game called Secret Sound Steps. If the next sound answered, she would follow it. From the high little shelf came a dry papery tick-tick, softer than a seed in a cup. Tansy left her cozy sun stripe, padded past the cool plant pot, and stretched up on careful toes. A leaf brushed her ear, and her tag bumped the pot with a loud clink.
“Who’s playing?” Tansy whispered. Behind the crisscross box, three dust-speck dots wiggled into a tiny trail, pointing to a spilled pinch of birdseed. Tansy could have batted it everywhere, but she carried one seed back in her mouth and set it in the sun. Soon sparrows tapped at the window, answering ting with peck-peck-peck. Tansy’s joy puffed so big she called the whole room to listen. Can you find the tag that started the secret sound steps?
