🎨 How to color it

Layer the schnauzer’s wiry coat in salt-and-pepper gray, make the floral bow tie deep burgundy, color the brick walkway warm terracotta, and give the curling leaves sage green. Use sharp colored pencils and follow the engraved fur lines in small strokes, saving the brick rectangles for steadier, even pressure. For a polished twist, add a faint golden highlight to the bow tie’s center knot and repeat that glow in just a few leaf tips.

At the tiled arcade, Otis stood where the bricks held the afternoon’s heat and the carved vines threw lace-thin shadows over his paws. In the center of his bow tie sat a dull little knot, heavier than it looked, warm against his chest. He had carried it all morning from arch to arch, pausing whenever the fountain hissed or a cartwheel clicked, as if the knot were listening for a name.

The plaza slowly filled with ordinary marvels: citrus peel in the air, pigeons tapping like dropped beads, a breeze combing the ornamental leaves above the walkway. Otis did not hurry. He tilted his whiskered face toward each sound, and the knot answered with the smallest pulse, not bright enough to see, but bright enough to feel.

Then the sun slipped between two rooftops and struck the knot. It opened without a seam. From inside came no jewel, no message, only the collected music of the whole arcade—brick warmth, fountain-silver, cartwheel-click, leaf-whisper—spilling outward in a soft gold ring. People stopped mid-step and smiled at one another before they knew why. Otis stood very still, wonder too large for one chest, while the bow tie shared what it had been gathering all along: the afternoon’s heat, held in the bricks.
