Before the first gold ray, a breakfast fig steamed on Seren’s watch-cloud, sweet as honey and cinnamon. She had just lifted it when the Dawn Chime of Auric City gave no sound at all. No bong rolled between the towers. No pigeons fluttered from the ledges. Seren tucked the fig into her sash and flew down from her cozy cloud to fetch one spark from the sun-dial spire.
The city felt too still. Her wings brushed cold mist from the glassy roofs, and her spear tapped tap-tap on each silent balcony. At the spire, the sun-dial bowl was empty. To reach the last hidden panel, Seren had to press her warm fig into its slot. The panel sighed open, smelling of baked sugar, and revealed a tiny bronze moth asleep inside her own round shield, right between the sun spokes.
“Wake slowly,” Seren whispered. She waited while the moth warmed its dusty wings. At last it rang one clear note—ting!—and every tower answered. Seren flew home without breakfast, but with a new hum under her armor. Can you find where the patient little secret slept, before the first gold ray?
