🎨 How to color it

Color the koala smoky gray, the Santa hat bright red with fluffy white trim, the present emerald green, and the eucalyptus leaves silvery blue-green. Use sharp colored pencils for the thin snowflake arms, leaf veins, and ribbon loops, then switch to broader strokes for the koala’s round belly and big ears. Try making the gift bow candy-cane striped so it pops against the cool winter branches.

Before moonset, Venn tucked a square box under his arm and whispered, “One branch farther.” He had made himself a challenge: carry the surprise to the highest winter perch without peeking inside. Frost clicked on the eucalyptus leaves like tiny glass teeth, and the red hat on his head smelled faintly of cedar smoke from the hollow where he usually slept.

Past the sleeping lorikeets, past three branches glazed with silver, Venn climbed until his paws ached. A snowflake landed on the ribbon knot and vanished. Then the box gave a soft chime. Not a bell—more like laughter trapped in paper. Venn stopped. If he took one more step, the thin branch might bend too far, and the present could tumble into the dark ferns below.

So he sat right there and untied the bow. Out fluttered dozens of warm golden paper stars, each one carrying a tiny joke written by someone in the ridge. They sailed down through the flakes, waking giggles in nests and burrows below. Next time you spot Venn holding that box, see if you can keep his secret too: the joy was too big to stay one branch farther.
