Under the black pines, Orbin turned his marshmallow slowly, slowly, hungry for one golden puff before the night wind found him. The tent ropes hummed, the canvas smelled like sun and rain, and the fire made only a shy little hiss.
Then something small coughed inside the coals. “Too cold for singing,” it rasped. Orbin bent closer and saw two ember eyes under a curl of ash. He had one marshmallow, already soft at the edges. No one watched from the dark trees. No badge waited in his pack. Still, he slid the sweet from his stick and tucked it near the shivering glow.
The coal-sprite sighed sugar smoke, then clapped its tiny hands: crack! crack! Since that night, every campfire gives two snaps when someone shares without asking for thanks. If you hear the second crackle under the black pines, can you keep Orbin’s secret?
