🎨 How to color it

Color the biggest dolphin slate blue, the two smaller dolphins soft gray and pale aqua, the coral peach, and the seaweed kelp green. Use colored pencils for the thin wave lines and coral branches, then fill the dolphins with smooth, even strokes that follow their curved backs. Try making the water behind the trio fade from turquoise near the surface to deeper blue around the bubbles.

Under the nursery ledge, Juno rubbed a cloudy pearl against her flipper and listened to the tiny click inside it. She wanted the pearl keeper to polish it before moonrise, because that click was the last sound her baby brother had made before he got too tired to play.

Past the warm sleeping current, the water turned sharp and cold. Juno swam beside her aunt and little cousin through whispering weeds, over prickly coral, and under fish that flashed like tossed coins. At the coral infirmary, a crab nurse shook an empty shell. “No shimmer-salt left,” she clacked. Juno knew shimmer-salt cost one pearl.

So here is the secret: nobody asked. Juno slid her cloudy pearl into the crab’s bowl and looked away while it dissolved with a soft fizz, smelling like rain on stone. By dawn, her brother’s clicks came back—small, then bright. Juno returned with no pearl, but two dolphins swam close on either side, and if you follow the bubbles below them, you may hear the tiny click she carried home.
