Under the moon-silver water, Nico pinched sea-sap between two shells, trying to make a lantern for the Tide Garden parade. Plip, plip—each bubble popped before it could shine. Behind a curtain of kelp, someone whispered, “Use your grin.” A tiny starfish stepped out, carrying a grain of sand that glowed like a firefly.
Nico mixed the glowing sand with his sea-sap and pressed it between his fins. The bubble stretched, round and wobbly, smelling faintly of salt and sweet coral. Nico smiled at it. The bubble smiled back. Soon more bubbles rose, each holding a little curved mouth, and the coral paths gleamed. Ever since, dolphins make bubbles with smiles tucked inside, proud as makers with sticky fins. If you spot one beside the little starfish, can you tell which was Nico’s first?
