Under the blanket fort, Nell tied a blue ribbon around her wrist and whispered her dare: cross the old covered bridge, touch the middle beam, and bring back one red leaf. The bridge sat beyond the creek bend, where the water went shush-shush over stones and the boards sometimes answered with creaks. “I can do three brave steps,” she told her pocket button.
She left the soft quilt smell and followed the muddy path. Halfway across, a gust slipped through the wooden slats and snatched her ribbon loose. Nell’s knees buzzed. She could run back, but the red leaf twirled on the far rail like it knew a secret. “Wait for me,” she whispered.
Nell crossed, took the leaf, and tied it where the ribbon had been. On the way home, the bridge creaked only once, like a wink. If you peek at the bridge beams, maybe you can tell which one heard Nell’s three brave steps.
