Under the blossom hedge, Pip tucked dry grass into his cozy fork of branch. He wanted one whisper bloom, the flower that made a nest hum softly at night. The closest bloom nodded just beyond his branch, past the dark gap where leaves went shh-shh. Pip stepped out. His toes prickled on the bark.
A tiny beetle in a shiny blue coat popped from a leaf. “Going somewhere?” she whispered. Pip nodded, though his beak felt tight. The beetle asked for one loose feather to line her rain cup. Pip gave it, crossed the gap, and smelled the sweet white bloom up close.
He brought the flower home, plus a new secret: the gap was only three small steps wide. Next time you spot the little stars around him, maybe they are the hush-hush places Pip is brave enough to visit.
