🎨 How to color it

Color the shepherd’s robe sandy beige, his staff warm brown, the lamb’s wool creamy white, and the rolling hills soft olive green. Use chunky crayons or broad marker strokes for the robe and hills, then let a sharper pencil trace the lamb’s little curls. Add a tiny gold stripe around the hooked top of the staff, as if it caught the evening light.

Under the low gold sky, Elior rubbed a smooth place on his new staff. Scritch, scritch went his little knife. He wanted to carve one good lamb-curl all by himself before the flock settled down. The wood smelled sweet, like sun-warmed cedar.

A small lamb nosed his sleeve. “Wait,” Elior whispered. He turned the staff to find a better spot, and a thin shaving popped loose from the hooked top. Inside was a tiny hollow, and in the hollow lay one rolled reed.

Elior blew across it. Hoo, soft as wool, came a song the lamb seemed to know. Elior carved his curl beside the secret place, proud and quiet. Next time you see the shepherd’s tall staff, can you guess where the little song is hiding?
