At breakfast, Gwenna slipped three sunflower seeds into her pocket and hurried to the palace balcony. She wanted to make her very first bird whistle before the bell rang—just one clear peep over the windy hills. The stone rail felt cool under her elbows, and the flowerpot smelled like damp leaves. She puckered her lips. “Pip?” she tried. It came out wobbly, like a squeaky door.
Then two little birds landed with a flutter-flap, so close that Gwenna’s knees buzzed. She opened her hand, and the seeds rolled into a tiny golden pile. Instead of eating right away, the birds whistled her sound back—pip!—then added three bright notes that bounced across the green hills. Gwenna laughed and tried again, louder this time. Pip-peep-pip! The birds hopped, the flowers nodded, and the balcony seemed to race with music. Next time you see the tiny seeds by her hand, can you hear the brave first pip?
