Every morning before the sun climbed over the orchard ridge, Mara counted the fruit aloud: apples with shiny shoulders, pears shaped like sleepy bells, and grape clusters that smelled sweet enough to make bees dizzy. In her pocket she kept a tiny wooden heart tag, smoothed by her thumb, because her mother had carved it on Mara’s first harvest day. Mara never hung it where anyone could see; she only tapped it for luck and whispered, “Not today.”

Until one day, a white dove swooped down, snatched the heart tag by its string, and flapped straight into the tallest fruit tree. Because of that, Mara had to climb past tickly leaves and wobbling pears while her cousin Joss called, “Careful, pocket-keeper!” Because of that, the branch bounced, the grapes jiggled like purple marbles, and Mara laughed so hard she forgot to be scared.

At last she tied the heart tag to the trunk, right where the branches divided like open arms. The dove settled beside it, cooing as if the whole orchard had been waiting. Mara still blushed when the others saw it, but she did not take it down. If you ever spot that little heart among the fruit, keep Mara’s secret: she tapped it once for luck, then let the sun climb over the orchard ridge.
