Under the cliff hollow, Jory scraped his paw over the lumpy den floor and sighed at the scratch-scratch sound. He wanted one smooth stone, wide enough for his chin at bedtime. The flat ones near home were already claimed by lizards, so he stepped onto the sunset escarpment, where the air smelled of dry grass and warm dust. Thorn tips tugged at his mane. Pebbles rolled under his paws. A gull cried far off, sharp as a whistle.
At the highest ledge, Jory found a stone shaped like a sleeping moon. When he pushed it, the rock beneath gave a tiny hum. He froze. Inside a narrow crack, hidden where no one ever put a nose, lay a curl of soft old grass, lion-scented and sweet with rain. It was not a stone at all, but a nest-place made by his pride long before him.
“I know this smell,” Jory whispered. He carried the grass home instead, tucked it into the hollow, and rested his chin where the floor no longer scratched. If you see him standing above the low sun, can you guess which rock hummed first?
