🎨 How to color it

Color the lioness tawny gold, her nose soft charcoal, the tall grasses olive green, and the acacia canopies dusty sage. Use sharp colored pencils for the whiskers, ear fur, and fine face lines, then switch to light marker fills on the broad cheek and neck areas. Try a pale sunrise gradient behind the acacia branches so her bright eyes feel like the first thing catching the morning.

Every morning before the heat shimmered, Saba played her new game beside the tall grass: count three sounds without moving a paw. One tick of a beetle. Two wing-flicks in the acacia. Three dry seeds rattling like tiny bones. She wanted to reach ten before the sun warmed her whiskers.

Until one morning, after seven, the world stopped. No beetle tick. No bird click. Even the grass held its breath. Because of that, Saba lifted her head and found the silence pointing at a thorn thicket. Because of that, she stepped closer, although her paws tingled, and heard a trapped guinea fowl whisper, “Please.”

Saba pressed one shoulder into the scratchy branches. Thorns combed her fur; dust smelled sharp and old. Finally, the bird squeezed free in a burst of speckled wings, and the savanna burst back too—chirrs, clicks, rustles, ten at once. Next time you see Saba’s listening eyes, see if you can count the sounds she found before the sun warmed her whiskers.
