Every morning, before the sun crossed the highest tower, Amara raced through the palace counting joyful sounds: hoofbeats on stone, pages laughing, spoons chiming in bowls. She had set herself a new challenge—ten happy noises before noon, no repeats—and the ninth was always the pearl necklace clicking coolly at her throat.
Until one day, the tenth sound did not come. The halls lay hushed under a strange woolly silence, and even the fountain only mouthed its splash. Because of that, Amara chased a faint tick-tick up the observatory stairs, where dust smelled like old maps. Because of that, she found the wind-bell tangled in a torn kite string and her tiara’s tallest jewel caught the light like a tiny blue flame.
“Hold steady,” she whispered, tugging the knot free. At once the bell rang bright enough to send pigeons whirring from the roof. Finally, Amara tapped her pearls against the railing—clack, clack, clack—and the cooks, guards, and gardeners answered from below with pans, boots, and cheers. If you catch the sparkle on her crown, can you hear the tenth happy noise joining the ninth?
