🎨 How to color it

Give the ranger’s hat a warm tan, the jacket a moss green, the trail sign a weathered brown, and the pines two deep evergreen shades. Use sharp colored pencils for the many leaf clusters, boot laces, and wood-grain lines, then fill the wider path and jacket with smoother strokes. Try a pale gold sunset glow behind the distant clouds so the pointing arm feels like it is leading toward a secret lookout.

Every afternoon, Mina walked the pine trail with her ranger pack snug on her shoulders, tapping each signpost once and listening for the forest’s answer. She wanted every hiker to hear the soft places she heard: fern fronds brushing boots, chickadees clicking like pebbles, wind combing the high needles.

One bright day, she invented the Echo Map Game. “Choose a sound, then point where it came from,” she told the first family at the fork. A hollow tok-tok bounced from a dead pine. Because of that, the children pointed left instead of rushing to Nature Point. Because of that, another group stopped, listened, and heard a faraway splash where no stream was marked.

Mina followed the shared pointing until the trail bent into a small bowl of trees. There, the whole forest seemed to answer at once: woodpecker, water, wing, wind. The joy rose so big in her chest that she whispered, “Pass it on.” Next time you see Mina’s raised hand, which forest sound would you point toward first?
