Every day before her beach birthday, Zora stamped little paths in the sand with her shovel and stopped exactly where the foam hissed. The water was loud there, all slap and sparkle, and it made her toes curl inside her sandals. Then she invented Tide-Tag: whoever touched the flag on the sand tower after following three shell clues could shout the first birthday cheer.
Until one day, a quick silver wave snatched the first shell marker and rolled it toward the bubbling edge. Because of that, the whole game froze; even the balloons tugged at their bucket like they wanted to run. Because of that, Zora grabbed the shovel, raced after the shell, and planted it higher up the beach where the wet sand felt cool and brave under her feet.
“Tag the tide back!” she yelled, laughing when the next wave stopped short of her toes. Finally, she reset the clues around the tower, tied the flag tighter, and let everyone charge in a sandy thunder. Next time you spot the shell closest to the foam, you’ll know where Zora first let the water hiss hello.
