Every day, Pip sat by the garden path and waited for the mail cart to squeak-wink past the gate. He loved that tiny sound: eek-eek, hello! He never barked or chased it, even when his paws itched.
Until one day, a striped leaf-bug popped from the hedge and bowed. “I borrowed the squeak,” it whispered, clicking like dry seeds. Because of that, the mail cart rolled by silent as a sock. Because of THAT, Pip followed the bug through tickly leaves, past flowers smelling like honey, and waited while it hiccuped three silly eeks into a hollow acorn.
Finally, Pip carried the acorn to the gate in his mouth. The cart rolled over it—EEK-WINK! Hearts seemed to bounce in Pip’s chest. Next time you spot his patient smile, can you guess where that mischievous squeak is hiding?
