Past midnight, the brass weather vanes above the star aviary clicked in a restless wind, and Vesper slid from his high ring to search for the north mark that had vanished from his wind-map. He crossed the glass roof, where frost rasped under his claws, and traded one copper tail feather to the sleepy moth-lamp for a minute of violet light. The map still showed only circles, circles, circles, as if the sky had folded its secret shut.
A draft lifted the loose feather crown behind his ears. There, where no chartmaker would think to look, a tiny black seed of ink had dried between two pale barbs: the missing north mark, caught there when he first drew the map. Vesper pressed it back onto the paper, but he no longer wanted to leave. The aviary hummed, the vanes settled, and every circle pointed home.
