Every evening, Quibble tapped his claws on the crooked branch and made up quiet games for falling leaves. His newest was Pumpkin Wink: blink at the carved pumpkin, hoot “boo-boo,” then wait for it to blink back.
Until one night, the pumpkin did wink—because three giggling bats were hiding behind it. Because of that, Quibble hiccuped so loudly that a cloud curled like smoke. Because of THAT, the bats shouted, “Your turn!” and flapped around the moon.
Quibble’s feathers prickled, but he leaned close to the glowing pumpkin smell and gave one enormous wink. “Boo-boo!” The bats tumbled laughing from the branch, and the game belonged to him again. If you spot the pumpkin’s grin, dare it to wink first.
